Concert Review:: EPMD and Rakim at Central Park

Hip Hop…. Funk Master Flex.... EPMD.... Rakim... Concerts…. Free.

Where can you find all of this in one place? New York City’s Summer Stage concert series.

Thousands of old school hip hop fans came out on a gloomy Sunday afternoon in Central Park to hear Funk Master Flex, EPMD and the legendary Emcee Rakim. From beginning to end, the mostly older crowd, was enthusiastic. You could definitely feel the vibe of true hip hop fans ready to hear the veteran MC’s who have paved the way for all the Jay Z’s, 50 Cents, and Lil Waynes.

Concert Review:: SummerStage Series with Nas and Damian Marley

On a sublime summer evening, Central Park's SummerStage series successfully served up a healthy dose of hip hop and reggae to a sold out crowd topping 6,000. Nas and Damian Marley, on the last stop of the world tour of their Distant Relatives album, brought their respective stylings in full force, bringing energy and love to an eager and eclectic Manhattan audience.

Hipsters to dreads old and young to mothers with their teenagers, started the evening off with Theophilus London, a Brooklyn MC hailing originally from Trinidad. Dressed in skinny white jeans and a signature The Lovers x Fresh.i.Am GG$ Snapback Hat, London opened with his self affirming mantra "Last Name London" from his debut album Timez Are Weird These Days trying to engage a slightly hazy but still growing crowd into an indifferent sway. London with his backing crew of three made a valiant effort to bring the boogie with his "Girls Girls $" and the TV on the Radio inspired "Wine & Chocolates" but as the billowing smoke started growing, it was obvious that everyone was there for the main event.

Album Review:: Jill Scott - The Light of The Sun

Finally!  The hiatus is over. Jill Scott has done it once again.  Real fans won’t be disappointed and new fans will be gained.  By now you''ve heard the lead single to the album, "So in Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton.  Though it''s a great feel good song which seems to be a hit with the masses, I personally could take or leave the disco vibe of the song. I don''t feel it as much as the many wonderful "B" sides included on this CD.

In typical fashion Jill brings her liquid bohemian soul to each and every track on the album while dispensing love and life lessons over some really nice production.

Although she has nothing but classics in her discography, this is her first time debuting at #1. As reported by MTV, Jill stated "I didn''t see that coming," she admitted. "I guess every artist hopes people will appreciate what they do and enjoy them, but I didn''t see it coming," Scott gushed. "I''m still tripping off it."

Album Review:: Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin

When I got the opportunity to review this latest album from Raphael Saadiq I already had an idea in my head of how it would sound. Typical smooth and effortless vocals from the front man of Tony Toni Tone right?  As a fan of good music you tend to have specific expectations for certain artists and in my opinion this is always true when it comes to your favorites. The album is certainly not what I expected. It exceed any expectations I may have blindly brought to the table. The sound is conceptual. It brings to mind the Beatles, The Doors, James Brown, a moody late 60's rock and soul sound.
